Background

We amplify communinity dialogue by enabling and enhancing public access to information that is critical, especially that which has a direct impact on people's daily lives. Kibera Documentary Center is happy to partner with local organisations in echoeing their research and findings. We do these by attending, and documenting local events, practitioners meet-ups, and scrolling social media.

This workshop is organised by Kibera Documentary Center

INTRODUCTION

With the decline of traditional media, the oversaturation of images online, and the rise of AI and disinformation, the role of the ‘concerned photographer’ is shifting as well. How can photographers sustain their ‘truth-teller’ status in a world where the idea of truth is under siege? How do we connect with viewers who have ‘visual consumption fatigue’? How do we get viewers to care?

To stand out, keeping things personal and authentic is more important than ever, in both visual style and narrative approaches. We will discuss the importance of ideas, personal vision, and authorship in photography, and how to shape a photo story or series around those elements. Our focus will be on the everyday lives and realities of the participants, how to tell their stories effectively and uniquely.

We will meet on Saturday, Dec 2 for presentations, discussion, and introduction of the photo assignment for participants. They will then have one month to complete a photo story.

We will have a virtual check-in for feedback at the halfway point, and a followup in-person workshop in January for final selections and critiques as a group.
